Farnan Challenges Hostile Teacher In Ninth Circuit

Yesterday, Advocates’ attorneys filed an opening brief in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of Chad Farnan. While the district court ruled in Chad’s favor stating that his teacher, Dr. James Corbett, violated the Establishment Clause when he stated an “unequivocal belief that creationism is ‘superstitious nonsense,’” the judge held this was the only statement that amounted to a constitutional violation. Advocates Takes Battle Against University of California to Supreme Court

On Friday, May 28, 2010, Advocates and its allied attorneys filed a brief asking the United States Supreme Court to agree to consider a case filed by Calvary Chapel Christian School (Murrieta, CA) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) against the University of California (UC) school system. Advocates is hopeful that the Supreme Court will agree to hear the case and reverse the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ prior ruling against Calvary and ACSI.

Obama Nominates Elena Kagan to United States Supreme Court

Recently President Obama nominated the former dean of Harvard Law School and current Solicitor General to the United States Supreme Court. Kagan has been a liberal force in academia and has represented the federal government before the Supreme Court for the last year. The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman announced that her confirmation hearings will begin on June 28, 2010. This will allow for the confirmation hearings to be completed in time for a final vote on the nomination before the Senate’s August recess.

Supreme Court Victory – Mojave Cross War Memorial Saved

This week, in Salazar v. Buono, the United States Supreme Court saved a Cross that has been dedicated as a war memorial in San Bernardino, California. The Cross stands no more than eight feet tall, but has been the center of a lengthy legal battle regarding whether or not the Cross can remain standing despite the constitutional challenges that were brought by the ACLU on behalf of an Oregon resident who maintains that he regularly visits the area.
